Products
The products currently available and cost efficient to use are as follows:-

Thermo Plastic
Hot applied and best suited to tarmac surfaces, it can be used on concrete but should have a tack coat base applied fififirst to offer greater adhesion. The wear rate is good but can be prone to chipping in colder weather and the depth of the line can become too thick due to too much remarking. This can be avoided by removing the existing line and beginning again with fresh application to keep the depth to a minimum. The winter can affect thermo lines on concrete. In winter months, when frost sets in, it can blow the line from beneath as the damp expands due to freezing.

Thermo-plastic is the most cost effcient product with the best all round performance. It should not be used on block sets however as with any line it will fail in the joints and may fail in other areas when this happens. If a surface has joints or pot holes there is no product which will stay in place, The curing time is 1.5 minutes for thermo, but any tack coat pre applied takes up to 15 minutes to cure prior to line application.

Chlorinated Rubber
Good all round paint product which will apply to any surface type. The cost is the same as the thermo-plastic but takes approximately (depending on ambient temperature) up to 20 minutes to cure properly so it can be trafficked. Like the thermo, this will also fail in any joints or pot holes and cracks. However, it will not chip away but, it will ware faster than thermo. It is a good product for concrete surfaces and block sets, however not as good on tarmac as the thermo product.

Single pack epoxy resin
This product is very similar to the chlorinated rubber but is a harder wearing product. It costs approximately 13% more and it will not last as long as the thermo- plastic. It will not chip, but again, it will be lost in cracks and joints.

Preform markings
This product is very similar in its characteristics to thermo-plastic. It comes in a solid version which is pieced together similar to a jig saw and then heated in the surface. Preform markings will have the same pro’s and con’s as the hot thermo, the cost is however is high in comparison.

MMA
This is a great product, it is essentially a cold epoxy similar to thermo, but shares similar qualities as the paint. In more detail, this has been achieved by embedding glass beads in to a fast curing two component Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) cold plastic line marking paint. It has been said by the manufactures of the product that there is a several year guarantee with this product. Some have mentioned in excess of 6 years, which unlike the other products which are warranted for a year with certain disclaimers. The manufacturer however will not supply
us with the written confirmation which has been claimed! Consequently it would not be good practice to offer this as a guarantee term without product back up in writing from the supplier. The other issue with the MMA is the cost which on average is four times that of thermo-plastic as a minimum.
